A Pause to Thank Myself

There is something we often forget in the middle of life’s rush to appreciate ourselves. We move from one task to another, one expectation to another, always thinking about what we still have not done. Somewhere in that endless list of “to-dos”, we rarely stop and say, I have come this far, and that itself matters.

The world constantly teaches us to improve, to work harder, to become better versions of ourselves. That is important, of course. Growth is a beautiful thing. But in that journey of becoming better, we sometimes forget to acknowledge the person we already are.

Self-appreciation is not arrogance. It is not standing in pride and declaring ourselves perfect. It is simply recognising our own efforts. It is the quiet moment where we tell ourselves, I tried. I endured. I kept going.

Every person carries battles that others cannot see. Some struggles remain hidden behind smiles, routine, and ordinary conversations. Yet every day we wake up, face our responsibilities, and continue walking forward. That itself deserves a small moment of recognition.

Even I realise that this is something I need to practice more often. Like many people, I sometimes focus too much on what I have not done yet instead of appreciating the steps I have already taken. It is easy to be kind to others, to encourage them and appreciate their efforts. But strangely, we are often the last person we show that same kindness to.

Perhaps self-appreciation is a form of quiet strength. When we learn to value our own efforts, we do not constantly wait for the world to notice us. Praise from others becomes a pleasant addition, not a necessity for our confidence.

Life is not a race where every step must be perfect. Sometimes the most important thing is simply continuing the journey. Growth happens slowly, like a plant growing beneath the soil before it finally appears above the ground.

So every once in a while, we should pause and look at our own path. The mistakes we learned from, the efforts we made, the courage we gathered on difficult days all of these are part of our story.

And perhaps the most important lesson is this: before expecting appreciation from the world, we must first learn to offer a little of it to ourselves.

It is a simple habit, but one that even I am still learning to follow.
